The Crisis Manual for Early Childhood Teachers: How to Handle the Really Difficult Problems
Karen Miller, Nancy Alexander, Rebecca Jones The Crisis Manual helps teachers face crises in real classrooms. It provides a problem solving process and ideas for handling really difficult situations. At the same time it is an encyclopedia of agencies, organizations, and books on the really big worries: separation and divorce, domestic violence, television violence, death of a family member, AIDS, and child abuse. (Judy Helm - this book should be on every early childhood director and principal's desk!)

Ghosts from the Nursery: Tracing the Roots of Violence
Robin Karr-Morse, Meredith S. Wiley, T. Berry Brazelton (Introduction) This is a thought provoking book about violent behavior and how it can be learned and cultivated in the first few months of childhood. Even more startling, the authors put forth the theory that a predisposition to violent behavior might occur before birth when a "chemical wash" of toxins such as drugs and alcohol, combined with a mother's stress hormones generated from rage or fear can directly effect the babies brain development. This is a fascinating book that brings home the understanding that we need to nurture the whole child and the whole family if we want positive outcomes.

Unsmiling Faces: How Preschools Can Heal
Lesley Koplow, Editor A truly outstanding book about helping children through crises in a preschool environment. It provides early childhood professionals with a framework for understanding the emotional lives of the young children but also practical ideas for making the preschool classroom function as It combines a theoretical foundation with a practical basis for making preschool classrooms function as therapeutic environments where children can feel safe and secure. The stories are vivid and the message is strong - we can be the place where children can learn to smile again.

Creating Schools That Heal: Real-Life Solutions
In a world where children are beset by violence and stress, Lesley Koplow provides educators with clear, level-headed advice on how to construct therapeutic learning environments for all children. This is a book about integrating preventive mental health practice into public schools (preschool through grade 5). She helps educators read the signs of distress or problematic social/emotional development in the school setting. Presenting a practice model that calls for strengthened teacher-child connections she sddresses, in separate the roles of the teacher, principal, and school-based clinician in meeting children's needs and provides guidance and effective strategies for each. She also addresses Includes a chapter addressing what we’ve learned from the recent tragic events of September 11th in New York City.

Pathways to Play
Sandra Heidemann and Deborah Hewitt One might wonder why this book is listed as a resource for children in crisis. Not only do children who have suffered trauma, abuse and neglect have difficulty playing, but play is also therapeutic for them. High quality play in the early years is also predictive of school achievement especially reading comprehension. So at Best Practices, we include play training in our recommendations for children and families in crisis. With the easy-to-use, accurate play checklist in Pathways to Play, teachers and caregivers can pinpoint the step in cooperative play where a child is having problems. Then, with the activities that correspond with each checklist item, you can plan activities that encourage the child to develop the needed skills.
