BD 1: A Teacher's Introduction to Brain Development Audience: Teachers, Associate Teachers, Administrators of infant through high school ages; One-Day Research is providing powerful new insights into how the brain learns which impacts how we treat young children, how we teach, and how we structure our schools. The goal of this one-day training is to present this information in a way that teachers can easily understand the implications for children and their families. Discussion includes the effect of love and interaction, stress, drugs, TV, and learning activities on brain growth and how you can do a better job of helping your children be smart. Five hour training BD 2: Advanced Topics in Brain Development Research for Classroom Teachers Audience: Teachers, Associate Teachers, Administrators, prekindergarten through elementary school One-Day Prerequisite: A Teachers Introduction to Brain Development. This second workshop in the brain series is also for teachers and other staff in early childhood education programs. The day builds upon the concepts of A Teacher's Introduction to the Brain. A brief review of brain basics is followed by an update on current brain research from the Dana Foundation. An in-depth look into the effects of stress on the brain is followed by brief summaries of the insights from brain research into ADHD, reading and dyslexia, autism, and learning problems. Like A Teacher's Introduction to Brain Development, this session is an update and overview for classroom teachers and is not likely to be in-depth enough for those trained in meeting these special needs or for therapists or medical practitioners. BD 3: What Does Brain Development Tell Us About Classroom Organization and Management? Audience: Teachers, Associate Teachers, Administrators, prekindergarten through elementary school Three hours Prerequisite: A Teacher's Introduction to Brain Development This advanced session begins with a quick review of knowledge about the brain, how children learn, and the purposeful engagement of emotions. Then the focus is on application to classroom environments including group work in analyzing the classroom physical environment, classroom rules and organization, classroom schedules, curriculum experiences and goal setting. BD 4: A Parent's Introduction to Brain Development Audience: Parents and Parent Educators 1 1/2 to 2 hours This one to two hour introduction to brain development helps parents understand the important contributions that they make to the development of their child's intellect. Emphasis is on helping parents become good consumers of information about the brain - how to sort the hype from what is helpful - and to provide practical ideas for families.
