General Topics by Judy Harris Helm on Assessment and Integrating Assessment with Teaching

GA 1 Assessment Alternatives
Audience: Teachers, Associate Teachers, and Administrators of early childhood, kindergarten and primary classrooms
One Day

This one-day workshop guides administrators and key teaching personnel through reflection about different assessment systems and their appropriateness for individual programs. Alternative approaches to assessment are reviewed, with clear explanations of validity, reliability and other important considerations in selection of an assessment system. Participants work through a decisionmaking process that considers characteristics of their children and families, requirements of funding agencies, training and preparation of their teaching staff, and available preparation time to come to a practical approach to assessment in their program.

GA 2 Embedding Assessment into Early Childhood and Primary Classrooms
Audience: Teachers, Associate Teachers, and Administrators of early childhood, kindergarten and primary classrooms
One Day

If We Don’t Know Where We’re Going, How Do We Know When We’re There?
This workshop helps teachers work on integrating assessment into their daily routines and themes, units and projects. Topics include using the environment to assess, efficient use of anecdotal notes, a variety of ways to collect checklist data, and integration of assessment with teaching style. Several approaches to portfolios are introduced. The day ends with a guided anticipatory planning web experience in which teachers practice integrating assessment into their planning process.

GA 3 Using Assessment Data for Planning Instructional Experiences
Audience: Teachers, Associate Teachers, and Administrators of early childhood, kindergarten and primary classrooms
One Day

Once assessment data is collected, how can you use it? This workshop focuses on using portfolios, checklists, and other forms of assessment to determine if standards are being met and developing a plan for integrating assessment into the classroom. At this session, participants learn how to organize assessment data in meaningful ways to teach efficiently. Participants learn how to identify an individual child's zone of proximal development, to communicate with parents and to maximize effectiveness of teaching.
